India’s Whisky Moment: Goan Single-Malt Kadamba Triumphs as ‘Best World Whisky’ in the USA

In a historic breakthrough for Indian spirits, Kadamba Indian Single-Malt Whisky has captured the global spotlight by winning the coveted Best World Whisky title at the renowned John Barleycorn Awards USA. The prestigious honour places Kadamba at the pinnacle of international whisky excellence and marks a defining moment in India’s journey as a serious force in the world of premium single malts.

This international recognition is particularly significant as Kadamba is celebrated as the world’s first Champagne Barrel Finished Indian single-malt whisky. By combining bold maturation techniques with refined craftsmanship, Kadamba has successfully challenged traditional whisky-making norms and impressed one of the most discerning juries in the global spirits industry.

Widely respected for their rigorous evaluation process, the John Barleycorn Awards recognise outstanding spirits based on quality, character, and innovation. Kadamba’s triumph in the World Whisky category highlights not only its exceptional flavour profile but also the growing global appreciation for Indian single malts, crafted in unique tropical conditions.

Kadamba is part of the luxury spirits portfolio of the Cheers Group, valued at approximately ₹1,000 crores. The group has earned global attention for its distinctive humidity ageing process, an innovative method that leverages India’s climatic conditions to enhance maturation. This approach allows whiskies to develop intense complexity, smoothness, and depth, setting them apart from traditional whiskies aged in cooler climates.

Speaking on the achievement, Ashwin Balivada, CEO of Cheers Group, remarked, “This recognition from the John Barleycorn Awards USA is a validation of our vision to create a whisky that is truly world-class while retaining an Indian soul. Kadamba’s win reflects the dedication, innovation, and craftsmanship that goes into every bottle.” Balivada, who holds a Master’s degree in Business Management from the University of Cambridge, UK, has been instrumental in shaping the group’s global ambitions.

The award-winning Kadamba Champagne Barrel Finished Single-Malt Whisky is produced at Imperial Distillers near the historic Kadamba region in Goa—an area steeped in cultural significance as the seat of the Kadamba dynasty, which ruled Goa for over three centuries. Drawing inspiration from this rich legacy, the whisky blends heritage with contemporary distillation excellence.

Kadamba undergoes primary ageing for four years in charred American oak barrels, imparting its deep amber colour and core flavour structure. The whisky then receives a secondary maturation in Champagne barrels, a rare finishing technique that lends refined sweetness, creamy textures, and subtle notes that elevate its overall character. This innovative finishing has been a key factor in Kadamba’s global acclaim.

The judging panel at the John Barleycorn Awards described the whisky as “silky and refined, with dark caramel tones, a buttery vanilla backbone, and hints of brioche and brown butter, finishing with a gentle fudge-like sweetness.” These tasting notes capture the complexity and balance that distinguish Kadamba from its global counterparts.

Dr. Mohan Krishna Balivada, Founder of Cheers Group and the world’s first doctorate holder in alco-bev marketing, highlighted the broader impact of the win, stating, “Kadamba Champagne Edition’s recognition as Best World Whisky sets a new benchmark for Indian spirits. This achievement strengthens our global standing and reinforces our commitment to innovation, quality, and excellence in the whisky category.”

With this landmark win, Kadamba has not only elevated its own brand stature but has also reshaped global perceptions of Indian whisky. As consumers worldwide increasingly seek distinctive, premium spirits, Kadamba stands as a proud ambassador of India’s evolving whisky narrative—one defined by innovation, heritage, and world-class quality.
