The Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor stands as one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, blending modern transportation with environmental conservation. CivilMantra ConsAi Ltd. has played a crucial role in designing the economic corridor, particularly in creating Asia’s longest wildlife corridor, ensuring safe passage for animals while meeting the infrastructure needs of the growing region.
Designing for Wildlife and Connectivity
A key feature of the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor is its wildlife corridor, an innovative solution for safely connecting wildlife habitats across the road. CivilMantra ConsAi Ltd. contributed to ensuring that the corridor design minimized human-wildlife conflict, specifically for elephants and other endangered species.
The economic corridor passes through sensitive areas like Rajaji National Park, and ensuring that wildlife could cross safely required advanced engineering.
Addressing Engineering Challenges
The economic corridor spans 380+ spans of Steel Composite construction standing on single pier supporting 25m wide structure width in curvature, for the elevated sections over Rajaji National Park. These spans ensure both strength and flexibility while traversing the diverse landscape. CivilMantra ConsAi Ltd. took care of complex challenges like Flashy river and Impact due to High water flow, seismic zone-4 having severe environmental conditions, changing flow direction across the viaduct and providing vertical clearance for smooth flow from the old existing carriageway of NH 307, ensuring the structure could withstand natural forces while ensuring safety.
Key Infrastructure Features
Two major viaducts:
• Total length of 6.252 km
• Constructed over Rajaji National Park, a vital ecological area
• Designed to elevate the corridor above the park, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural landscape
• Facilitates efficient transportation while preserving the ecosystem
Two elephant underpasses:
• Dimensions: 7m x 28m
• Designed to allow safe passage for elephants, preventing wildlife collisions and reducing human-wildlife conflicts
The project includes:
• Four major bridges
• Fourteen minor bridges
• Specialized designs for smoother traffic flow
The Daatkali Mandir overpass:
• Thoughtfully designed to reduce congestion around the religious site
• Improves access for locals and devotees
The 340-meter tunnel near Daatkali Mandir:
• Designed to accommodate all traffic
• Ensures smooth flow of vehicles through the high-traffic area
Design Speed and Efficiency
With a design speed of 100 km/hr, the economic corridor significantly reduces travel time from 6 hours to 2.5 hours. This has not only improved accessibility but also has the potential to boost the local economy by facilitating faster movement of goods and people.
Conclusion: A Landmark of Sustainable Development
The Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor sets a new standard in infrastructure development by balancing the needs of modern transportation with the preservation of natural ecosystems. CivilMantra ConsAi Ltd. played a critical role in designing a project that accommodates both human and wildlife needs. With the economic corridor now complete, it serves as a model for future projects, where sustainability and efficiency go hand in hand.
